Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

Martin Luther King Jr, an American Baptist minister was one of the most visible black spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement. Web observe MLK day as a federal holiday intended to encourage Americans, not to take the day off, but rather volunteer in their near by communities to help improve quality of life for others.

If you are willing an able, pick a volunteer opportunity near you. There are several ways to find these opportunities. The Red Cross is one way and has opportunities all over the United States. Search the internet for opportunities closer to home. The Boys & Girls Club is also a great avenue to find volunteer opportunities. Visit https://www.bgca.org/. In my local area Habitat for Humanity does a tremendous amount of work helping families get into homes. Visit their website at https://www.habitat.org/.

There are several things about MLK that you may not know. First, his real name was Michael not Martin. He was born on January 15, 1929, hence celebrating MLK day every third Monday of January. In 1934, MLKs father, also a pastor, traveld to Germany and was inspired by the Protestant Reformation leader Martin Luther. MLKs father then decided to change his own name to Martin Luther making him the Sr. and then changed Michael’s name to Martin when he was five years old.

MLK started college at the age of 15. He was a gifted student who enrolled at Morehouse College in 1944. MLK ws ordained before graduating with a degree in sociology. He wasn’t always a believer in the family vociation until Morehouse president theologian Bejnamin E. Mays was able to convince him otherwise.
